Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I was contemplating writing this blog for a while, but the recent happening in Delhi woke me up and forced me to share how beautiful and pure our women in India are. My story dates back 25 years where I used to live in a chawl in Bhendi Bazar, where I grew up and though a very notorious place, I am still proud of it as I learnt a lot from there. This story is about my great grand mother who should be 90 years of age at that time, fell in the bathroom and broke her leg. She was frail but had her senses in place where she was aware of the surroundings.
We immediately taxied her to JJ hospital. As soon as we reached the hospital, I ran to get a wardboy and stretcher. As it arrived, we transfered my grandma to the stretcher. I am sure she must be withering with pain as the bone had fractured and she was not a strng lady agewise as well as healthwise. As teh wardboy lifted her from the taxi and was about to place her on the stretcher, my grandma started yelling माझा पदर माझा पदर !! (My Veil My Veil!!). What amazed me at that moment was her awareness of the surrounding and the agility she showed to protect her chastity. Though she was ninety years frail lady, withering with pain, she wanted to ensure that her saree was in proper place and she did not wanted to be in an awkward position. I have still not forgotten about this moment and never will. I have always respected women and have saluted them for all the pains they take to make our lives comfortable.
At this hour of crossroad, I am with each and every women in India who are fighting against the evil in the society and support theri cause. At the same time, as a man I feel ashamed at what happened to the brave girl and will hope for a more sensible society where women are treated with dignity and respect.
Jai Hind
